Activity 4a (Maths): Graphical Representations of Data

In this activity, you will use a digital camera to capture graphical representations of data (ie. charts and graphs) around you. Evaluate the choice of the graphical representations.

What to do:
1. Take photographs of 3 kinds of charts/graphs that you can find at home or in school. They should be cover 3 of the following...
  • bar graphs
  • pictograms
  • line graphs
  • pie charts
  • histograms

2. Insert the photos in a PowerPoint Presentation.

3. Beside each photo, name the type of graphical representation and suggest why that graphical representation is used to present the data.

4. Upload the PowerPoint slides into GoogleDoc.

5. Create a post in the Activity blog (pyss-activity4a.blogspot.com) and embed the presentation in the post (see Additional Handout 1, p1-3).

6. Your work will be posted in the Activity blog.

In this activity, you will use a digital camera to capture the images of common daily objects. Evaluate the choice of materials used to make the objects.

What to do:
1. Take photographs of 3 everyday objects that you can find at home or in school. It must be made of at least 2 of the following materials:
  • Metals
  • Ceramics
  • Glass
  • Plastics
  • Fibres

2. Insert the photos in a PowerPoint Presentation.

3. Beside each photo, describe the types of materials used to make the object. Why are these materials used?

4. Upload the PowerPoint slides into GoogleDoc.
